How to get started in quarter midget racing?

The best way to get started is simple: come visit us at the track. Come out to visit, walk through the pits, meet families, ask questions, hang out and watch the racing.

See if your child is excited about getting behind the wheel, then come back for our Spring and/or Fall Drivers experience, where we provide the cars and safety equipment for your child to give it a try in a controlled environment!

Many new families attend a race night before making any decisions. You’ll quickly notice that quarter midget racing is extremely welcoming and family focused.

MCQMRC members are always happy to help explain:

  • Car classes
  • Safety equipment
  • Costs
  • Rookie training
  • What to buy
  • How race nights work

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need a brand-new race car to get started. You do not.

Most families begin with a used car, which is often the smartest and most affordable option. Used cars can come race-ready with spare parts, gears, tires, setup equipment, and safety items already included. There is a very wide range of pricing in quarter midget racing, and there are options available for many different budgets and goals. Some families simply want to race locally and have fun together on weekends. Others may eventually pursue larger regional or national events. Both approaches are completely valid, and many successful racers started with modest used equipment before gradually upgrading over time. The most important thing is getting your child on the track, learning, having fun, and becoming part of the racing community.

Popular quarter midget chassis brands include:

  • Bullrider
  • Storm
  • Nervo
  • Ultimate QM
  • Star
  • PDX

The best car for you often depends on:

  • Your budget
  • Your child’s age and class
  • What other racers at MCQMRC commonly run
  • The level of competition you plan to pursue

Our members can help guide you toward a good starter package and help you avoid overspending.

Safety is the top priority in quarter midget racing.

Drivers are required to have:

  • Helmet
  • Fire suit
  • Gloves
  • Neck restraint
  • Arm restraints
  • Racing shoes

Before racing competitively, all new drivers complete rookie training.

Rookie training teaches:

  • Basic car control
  • Flags and race procedures
  • Safety rules
  • Track etiquette
  • Confidence behind the wheel

The goal is to make sure drivers feel comfortable and safe before entering competition.

Every racer progresses at their own pace. Some kids are ready quickly, while others need more seat time. That’s completely normal.

Quarter midget racing quickly becomes more than just a hobby. Families help each other, kids make lifelong friendships, parents learn together and drivers grow both on and off the track.

At MCQMRC, you’ll find:

  • Weekly racing
  • Special events
  • Rookie programs
  • Club activities
  • National race opportunities
  • A supportive racing community

You do not need prior racing experience to get started. You just need a willingness to learn and a family ready to have fun together.
